- A more literal translation would be “while we are all about being noble/good”. I prefer a more direct contrast in between the two phrases, and thus my approach.
- Interesting enough, the English Wikipedia states only “gwisins” and what they are in the Korean folklore. If you’ve played Shin Megami Tensei or Devil Survivor, you’re probably familiar with the Kishin race. In Japanese, this term addresses a violent and fearful deity. One could argue that this should be translated as “demon god” or something similar, but well, once again I decided not to.
- I couldn’t resist doing this. Anyways. In Japanese the part in between quotes is two of the words you would shout when practicing bushido (and, what one would should before thrusting their sword). I’m pretty sure you have already heard or seen those words if you watch anime or read manga with combats in them.
Muramasa Blade!
nakanaka aite wa yaru you da
shizen to emi ga koborete shimau hodo da
toosugite wasureta
ima wa tada kishin to naru nomi
The enemy in front of me is quite skilled
I can’t help but smiling about it, I’m very pleased
That makes us seem like the bad guys
While we’re supposed to be the good ones1
What make it all start?
It’s been so long I don’t recall
Now all I’ve become is a kishin2
eiya sorya tte ki wo haite tamashii moyashite
Let out your “Hyaah! Take this!” and burn your soul3
Your task is to turn an instant into eternity
Sometimes all I want to do is to complain, but you know
I crush that feeling when I shout “Hyaah! Take this!”
kotoba wa mou nani mo iranai
majiwaru yaiba de katariau to shiyou
kuuki wa hinyari itetsuite
subete ga tomatte shimatta ka no you da
hajimari wa nan dakke
sore sura mo wasureta
tsukisusumu shika nai you da na
We don’t need to say any more words
It’s time to let our swords do the talk
The air is chilly and frozen
It feels like everything has stopped moving
How did this start?
I’ve forgotten even that
I guess I’ll just have to keep going on
eiya soryatte tachiuchi umaku tachimaware
hitto ando awee wa kihon no kihon
kono ato nani tabeyou? janen wa sutesari
eiya sorya tte oryouri koko de okatazuke
“Hyaah! Take this!”, we fight and I successfully go around
Hit and run is the basis of the basics
What can I eat later? I push aside my distracting thoughts
“Hyaah! Take this!”, and clean up the food
What does it mean to be alive?
Are you afraid to die?
Find the in-between
That’s the kind of life we should strive for
hokori wa aru ka
kodoku demo ii ka
kyoufu wa mou nai ka
tashikamero
Are you proud of yourself?
Are you willing to be alone?
Are you no longer afraid?
Let’s find out
nani mo kamo wasureta
ima dake wo ikinuku
shouri e no shuuchaku wo misero
I’ve forgotten everything
I’ll survive for now
Show me how much you desire victory
kore ga heijou untan kyou mo gokurou san
toki ni wa nakitaku naru sonna toshigoro
eiya sorya tte kiai de namida mo osouji
eiya sorya tte kiai de soregoto honsai
Let out “Hyaah! Take this!” and work with a clear mind
This is just another day, good job today
I’m at an age when sometimes all I want to do is cry
But I wipe my tears when I shout “Hyaah! Take this!”
I crush that feeling when I shout “Hyaah! Take this!”
