When Innocence is Just a Mask ~ Foreground Eclipse

I will probably re-translate some more Foreground Eclipse’s songs, because why not (also, old translations are old and FgE are/were my favorite band). /WHY THEY DISBANDED/

Notes

  1. There is no explicit “ ‘cause” in Japanese, but this phrasing conveys better the original meaning.
  2. I wish I could say this is a straightforward phrase with no room to interpretations, but this is not the case. In the end, I decided to divide the three phrases in the most logical sense, and thus this translation.
  3. So, first part of the phrase, this is not how you are supposed to use this verb, but these are lyrics. So, after discussing with my wife on how to translate this, we decided to ignore the passive form on this verb to make things a bit more… understandable. Maybe. As for the second part, I don’t think there is a word that is close to the Japanese meaning. The actual meaning of this phrase is, saying things that will lead to bad consequences for your/other’s future. For example, you have an important meeting the next day but you still invite people out for getting drunk. I’m not even sure this explanation is clear enough, but hopefully it will be enough to understand the concept.
  4. Since it’s after midnight as I’m writing this, I will not get into the details of why I decided to translate it like this, but I will simply say that this is mostly an interpretation based on the image that pops up on our minds (my wife’s and mine) when reading/hearing this sentence.

When Innocence Is Just A Mask

ここから 動けない 寂しさを紛らわせる為に
嘘を重ねた 虚構の空 見上げて
天使の羽なんて奪えばいい
いつだって飛べるさ1

koko kara ugokenai sabishisa wo magirawaseru tame ni
uso wo kasaneta kyokou no sora miagete
tenshi no hane nante ubaeba ii
itsudatte toberu sa

To forget this loneliness that won’t go away
I look up at a fabricated sky full of lies
I don’t care if I’ll lose my angel wings
‘cause I can always jump

Yeah
Do you still remember that day

理由なんて見つかるはずないよ
ねえ聞いて 残酷に微笑んだ
聖なる夜に招かざる者もう行くよ
僕を呼ぶ声がする

riyuu nante mitsukaru hazu nai yo
nee kiite zankoku ni hohoenda
seinaru yoru ni manekazaru mono
mou iku yo boku wo yobu koe ga suru

There is no way I can find a reason to this
Now hear me out; all these uninvited guests
Here on Christmas Eve, smiling cruelly
Are about to go; I hear a voice calling me2

Oh man, stop
So what
So what

ここから 動けない 寂しさを紛らわせる為に
嘘を重ねた 虚構の空 見上げて
天使の羽なんて奪えばいい
いつだって飛べるさ

koko kara ugokenai sabishisa wo magirawaseru tame ni
uso wo kasaneta kyokou no sora miagete
tenshi no hane nante ubaeba ii
itsudatte toberu sa

To forget this loneliness that won’t go away
I look up at a fabricated sky full of lies
I don’t care if I’ll lose my angel wings
‘cause I can always jump

歪んだ愛の形 塞ぎ込んだ心
冷たい雨が僕を嘲笑いながら
研ぎ澄まされた視線 身を滅ぼす言葉
楽園はすぐそこにある

yuganda ai no katachi fusagikonda kokoro
tsumetai ame ga boku wo azawarai nagara
togisumasareta shisen mi wo horobosu kotoba
rakuen wa sugusoku ni aru

Warped is my love and dispirited my heart
As the cold rain is making fun of me
Focused is my sight and malevolent my words3
Paradise is right there

傷跡残して 快楽の海に溺れていく
失うものは僕は何もないんだ

kizuato nokoshite kairaku no umi ni oboreteiku
ushinau mono wa boku wa nanimonainda

I leave scars and drown in the sea of pleasure
I have nothing to lose

The you will hear screaming
of the winds blowing at your face
Oh no you can’t do anything
This is my last revenge
Another form of my love for you

悪魔が語りかけたのさ さあおいで

akuma ga katarikaketa no sa saa oide

The devil spoke to me, he said: come to me

This is goodbye!

終わりが始まる 物語は景色を速める
優しい嘘は心を蝕んでく
天使の羽なんてもういらない
いつだって飛べるさ

owari ga hajimaru monogatari wa keshiki wo hayameru
yasashii uso wa kokoro wo mushibandeku
tenshi no hane nante mou iranai
itsudatte toberu sa

The story of the beginning of the end quickly wraps up4
All my kind lies are devouring my heart
I don’t need angel wings anymore
‘cause I can jump

This is the very end of our long wrong life
